WESNET participated in the 95th Strategic and Technological Council (STC) Conference of the African Water and Sanitation Association (AfWASA), which was held in Lilongwe from July 21 to 24, 2025. Hosted by the Lilongwe Water Board, the four-day conference convened over 200 water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) professionals from across the African continent.

Held under the theme “Green Economy and Climate Resilience in Africa,” the gathering served as a critical platform for strategic dialogue, technical exchange and action planning on sustainable WASH solutions.

In her opening remarks, Hon. Abida Mia, Malawi’s Minister of Water and Sanitation, called for African nations to unite in tackling persistent WASH challenges. She emphasised the need for internal financing mechanisms, climate-resilient infrastructure, and support for home grown innovations to reduce dependency on external aid.

WESNET echoes this call and reaffirms its commitment to:

  • ✅ Finalising the Sanitation and Hygiene Bill
  • ✅ Prioritising domestic financing and local solutions
  • ✅ Strengthening WASH governance and policy frameworks

Together, we can build a future where every African enjoys access to safe water, dignified sanitation and climate-resilient services.
