Lilongwe, 3 December 2025 — WESNET’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), held at the Pearl Convention Centre, brought together member organisations from across Malawi to reflect, learn and strengthen their collective commitment to ensuring that every Malawian enjoys access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services.

The AGM served as a platform for members to review progress, deliberate on governance and accountability matters, and renew the network’s shared vision for advancing Malawi’s WASH agenda in alignment with national priorities and Malawi 2063.

Government Reaffirms Commitment to Partnership

Delivering the closing remarks on behalf of Government, the Director of Water Supply Services, Mr. Prince Mleta, emphasized that WASH is more than a sector — it is a foundation for public health, climate resilience, economic productivity and human dignity.

He acknowledged the critical role WESNET continues to play in policy advocacy, knowledge generation, and coordination across central government, councils, civil society organisations, academia and development partners.

“As Government, we take note of the policy issues raised, including the need for stronger coordination mechanisms, improved data systems and accelerated investment in sanitation,” he said, reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to strengthened collaboration in advancing universal access to WASH services.

Leadership Renewal and Network Strengthening

A key highlight of the AGM was the election of new Board members who will steer the network over the coming term. Members expressed confidence that the new leadership will build on the foundation laid by the outgoing Board and Secretariat in strengthening coordination, advocacy and accountability within the sector.

The AGM also provided an opportunity to reflect on the network’s strategic direction, governance structures and financial sustainability — reinforcing WESNET’s role as a credible voice for civil society within Malawi’s WASH landscape

Moving Forward Together

This year’s AGM reaffirmed the importance of collaboration, innovation and accountability in addressing the persistent challenges facing Malawi’s WASH sector — including financing gaps, climate shocks, rapid urbanisation and sanitation inequalities.

As members return to their respective districts and institutions, the message is clear: the work continues beyond the AGM. Through strengthened coordination, shared accountability and sustained advocacy, WESNET remains committed to advancing safe, inclusive and sustainable WASH services for all Malawians.

We extend our sincere thanks to all members who participated and contributed to the success of the AGM. Together, we will continue to drive progress in the WASH sector.
